Orla qualified as a Solicitor in 1991 and ran the Family law department at Green Wright Chalton Annis, Solicitors, Worthing, West Sussex before leaving in 2005. She now works as a Consultant for that firm and practises as a Mediator at FMIS' Worthing office. She is an Advanced member of the Law Society Family Law Panel.
She first trained as a Mediator in 1997 with the Family Mediators Association was non-practising from 2002, due to the demands of legal practice and resumed mediation in February 2006.

All of the FMIS mediators are accredited members of the Family Mediators Association and members of the UK College of Family Mediators and have met its requirements as to competent practice and work to its standards. They are all recognised to conduct publicly funded mediation by the Legal Services Commission.
