Penny Dunne has a background as a family lawyer, since 1980. She has run her own law firm since 1990.. She has been on the Law Society's Children Panel since 1992 and represents children and Guardians in child care proceedings.
In 1990 she trained as a family mediator with the Family Mediators Association. She was involved in the development and regulation of family mediation nationwide from 1993 to 1999, first on the Board of the Family Mediators Association and subsequently as Chair of the Professionals Standards Committee at the UK College of Family Mediators. She is a director of Family Mediation in Sussex and practices in Brighton and Eastbourne.

All of the FMIS mediators are accredited members of the Family Mediators Association and members of the UK College of Family Mediators and have met its requirements as to competent practice and work to its standards. They are all recognised to conduct publicly funded mediation by the Legal Services Commission.
